Celtic Football Club was formed in the east end of Glasgow back in 1887. As a means of raising funds to support the young, poor of the area.
The club was set up by the Marist Brothers religious order that carried out community work with the needy.
The name Celtic reflects some locals’ Gaelic roots. Not long after being founded the team played their first ever match against Glasgow Rangers.
Who would go on to become their arch-rivals as both clubs rose to dominate Scottish, domestic football.
It was in the mid-1960s that Celtic came to prominence as a global football force, gaining recognition from the run.
They went on following the appointment of former Captain Jock Stein as their manager. In the golden year of 1967 the club won every competition they took part in.
The latter was won by a team of players who all came from within a 30 mile radius of the club. Incredible.
The final was in Portugal and the winners would forever be known as the Lisbon Lions.
The club has gone through some ups and downs since this great night including some flirting with financial catastrophe.
But there have been many successes under managers like Martin O’Neill, Neil Lennon and Brendan Rogers.
Glasgow Celtic, historic Parkhead and the land of the Lisbon Lions are well worth a visit.
