Abbotsford House
The site was initially a farm of about 100 acres that was bought by writer Walter Scott who built a house there.
This soon became a grand mansion as his imaginative construction continued. There were many sculptured stones built into the walls, reclaimed from ruined castles around Scotland.
Rooms such as the panelled library reveal the level of detail that went into the design of the whole house.
This creativity extended to the garden too with many curiosities such as old toll booth doors incorporated into garden walls.
The historical feel Scott wanted was also complemented by a desire for comfortable living; mod-cons such as the latest gaslighting techniques were integral to his domestic plans.
