Leighton Library
This is the oldest library in the UK that was intentionally built as a library. Archbishop Robert Leighton died and left his book collection to the town. Combined efforts raised money to build a library to house them. It opened as a private subscription library. There were not many members but due to the high quality of books within, the library received much support from the wealthy gentry nearby.
The oldest book on the shelves dates from 1504 – ‘Exquisitio’ by Herbert. The wood-panelled ceiling, grand bookcases and detailed display cabinets make this small, historic library a memorable place to visit.
